Rooster Brewing opens in Paris

red_rooster_4Paris businessman Ralph Quillin has a passion for: Shop Local, craft beer, and historic structures. Together, they make up Quillin’s latest venture Rooster Brewing at 609 Main Street in Paris.
The new craft brewery has a tap room and retail space in a restored Main Street (circa 1880) mercantile. In addition to producing its own brews, Rooster carries about 100 different beers. Hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Call (859) 707-3436.

Woodford Reserve Distillery, 7855 McCracken Pike, Versailles, is serving Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch for dads. A dinner buffet on June 14 begins with a Bourbon Discovery tour at 6:30 p.m.  Cost is $50. The menu, prepared by chef-in-residence Ouita Michel and her culinary team, includes barrel stave smoked prime rib, stuffed trout, loaded new potato gratin, and grilled “dadatouille” (local vegetables prepared in the classic ratatouille style). Most restaurants in Lexington are closed on Thanksgiving Day, but there are a few places that are open. Some restaurants will cook the turkey, or the entire meal, for you to pick up the day before. Here are places to dine, or pick up take-out.

New chef

■ David Danielson is the new executive chef at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Danielson joined the track’s culinary team in 2011 as executive sous chef. He studied at the Dumas Pere School of French Cooking and the hotel school Ecole Hoteliere Tain l’Hermitage in France, and has worked as the executive chef at New York’s United Nations Plaza Hotel, and the Ritz Carlton and Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago. If you’re in the mood for a simple, freshly made hamburger, you’ll want to try Anthony’s Fat Burgers. Anthony Adams opened the spot at 1539 Eastland Parkway on May 1. Several years back, Adams ran Anthony’s Coney Island at Third and Jefferson streets. “I got out of the business for a while, and now I’m back,” he said.

■ A reader stopped by El Chico Mexican Restaurant at Beaumont Centre last week and was surprised that it was closed. We checked with El Chico corporate office and spokesperson Ellen Courtney said the store closed in January. “The decision to close the Lexington El Chico was a difficult one. Farmers market report

■ Shelley Johnson, owner of Shelley’s Hand-Picked Asparagus, has a bountiful crop of asparagus this spring. “I’m picking 40 to 60 pounds daily,” she said. Although Johnson isn’t certified organic, she uses no chemicals or pesticides on the asparagus. Varieties are purple passion and Jersey knights and cost is $5 a pound. Blue Heron bar is open on Jefferson Street

Birds of a feather are flocking together on Jefferson Street. The owner of The Grey Goose has opened a new bar, called The Blue Heron, across the street from his popular pub.
“The Heron is a rustic little neighborhood bar that features a beautiful mahogany back bar built in the 1880s, a working fireplace around which are gathered a collection of leather club chairs and ottomans, and a one-of-a-kind centerpiece chandelier,” said Jeff Wheeler, who is general manager of The Blue Heron.
It and The Grey Goose are owned by Keith Clark.
An extensive selection of bourbons are available along with hand-crafted cocktails made with freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, house-made syrups and infused liquors.
The bar, at 185 Jefferson Street, is open at 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and at noon Sunday. It’s available for holiday parties. Call (859) 221-2357.

■ Just in time for holiday gift giving, the Ruth Hunt Candy Co. has doubled the  retail space at its new location, 213 Walton Avenue.
The Mount Sterling candy factory, known for its Blue Monday candy bar, was founded in 1921, when Ruth Tharpe Hunt began selling her homemade confections from her home. She moved to a factory location in 1930, and the company still makes candy using Hunt’s original recipes. An open house will be Dec. 3 to 7.

■ It’s an all-new Lock and Key Café in Georgetown.
Colleen London opened the business as a cafe in 2006 in the former Bank of Georgetown building at 201 East Main Street. Over the years, the concept for the Lock and Key has changed a few times, but now it’s back to a coffeehouse/café.

Chateau du Vieux Corbeau Winery in Danville will have an open house 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Winemaker Dominique Brousseau will offer guided cellar tours at 1 and 4 p.m. She will explain the wine-creation process and discuss the various pieces of equipment she uses in the process.
Brousseau will release her newest wine creation, called “Trouble,” which is named after one of her geese.
“This white blended wine is sweet and subtle and will sneak up to bite you on the bottom, just like its namesake,” Andre Brousseau said. The winery will also offer refreshments, with recipe cards, using the Chateau’s wines.

■ It’s cold outside, but the cooks at Kathy’s Country Kitchen in Clay City are grilling outdoors. Thanksgiving is Thursday. here are some places that are offering carryout meals.
